3 Herbs You Should Know About | Natural Remedies For Glaucoma

1. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is from one of the oldest trees known to mankind. It has been supporting health for almost 2,800 years. It helps promote blood circulation and maintain the normal function and tone of blood vessels. It can also promote oxygen circulation and glucose metabolism in the brain and eye. In glaucoma, this herb stabilizes the capillaries in the eye to make them less fragile.

Another interesting thing about Ginkgo Biloba is that it eases anxiety. It helps relieve the stress coming from having the eye condition.

2. Coleus Forskohlii

Coleus Forskohlii | Herbal Glaucoma Natural Remedies

This is a well-known Ayurvedic herb that has been supporting vitality and well-being for thousands of years. It is used to treat heart disease, hypothyroidism, and respiratory disorders. It is also a great herb for the treatment of glaucoma.

I find it interesting that many cases of glaucoma are related to hypothyroidism or low thyroid function. The thyroid is essential for good metabolic activity. When you have low thyroid activity, you have low blood flow and a low metabolic state. This can be detrimental to your eye, especially if you have glaucoma. That’s a key point. If you have glaucoma, make sure you get your thyroid function checked.

There have been some studies that have shown that topical application of Coleus Forskohlii lowers intraocular pressure. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any topical product of Coleus Forskohlii. Although, there was a company in Germany that attempted to bring this to market. Because of difficulty in the delivery system, it was abandoned. I think it was also because of problems with big pharma fighting the simple treatment.

Oral Coleus Forskohlii is controversial. There are some studies that show taking it in pill or herbal form may lower the intraocular pressure. That is open to question. I have found a few patients who begin taking Coleus Forskohlii, and it will lower their pressure. It can’t hurt, improves the thyroid function, and helps with heart disease and respiratory disorders. I think this is a great herb, and it is also in my Optic Nerve Support formula.

3. Ashwagandha

That’s a tongue twister. This is another Ayurvedic or Indian herb. It’s famous for regeneration. It also calms the mind, eases stress, and supports vitality and wellbeing.

Ashwagandha is a very powerful adaptogen. It will counter mitochondrial dysfunction. A lot of researchers feel mitochondrial dysfunction is the underlying problem in glaucoma. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. In mitochondrial dysfunction, you lose the delicate nerve fiber layers allowing further damage from glaucoma.

All these herbs are in my Optic Nerve Support formula. If you want more information on the Optic Nerve Support formula, which I recommend to all my glaucoma patients, go to www.HealingTheEye.com for more information.

Besides these herbs, many of the substances and building blocks you need are in your own neighborhood. Sometimes you don’t need to take these exotic herbs, but they can’t hurt. They’re certainly much better than taking glaucoma drops, pills, or petro-pharmaceutical chemicals.

I have to mention again that having a healthy, varied, organic green diet is important. Green and colorful foods are the best thing you can do for any eye disease. I may sound like a broken record, but one of the best things you can do is begin to look at the food you’re putting into your body. Shift your diet toward organic, raw food. Whatever your health condition is — hypertension, diabetes, a type of glaucoma, or age-related macular degeneration — shifting your diet to this organic, raw diet will be the best thing for you.

Why does it have to be raw?

A question I get all the time is, “Why does it have to be raw? I like green vegetables and colorful fruits, but why can’t they be cooked?” Unfortunately, cooking destroys the delicate protein structure in them. When the protein structure is destroyed, the amino acids are destroyed, too. The vegetables won’t have as much nutritional value anymore.

Keep these three herbs in mind — Ginkgo biloba, Coleus forskohlii, and Ashwagandha. You can buy them at any health food store. Begin by taking the lowest dose recommended, and then gradually increase. Sometimes, you can also get the tincture form. Whatever changes you make, make sure you’re under the care of an ophthalmologist. You need to keep your intraocular pressure checked regularly. Do not stop or discontinue any of your eye drops unless directed by your eye doctor.
