Why Cuba? Fidel Castro became interested in the use of ozone in treating chronic disease and he donated millions of dollar to a the Hospital Carlos J. Finlay Hospital that specializes in ozone treatments.
Dr Silvia Mendenez reported her results treating hundreds of patients with chronic eye disease using ozone. The interesting part of this story is that they primarily use ozone administered rectally.
What is ozone? Have you ever noticed the clean smell in the air after a lightning storm? You are smelling ozone gas that has reacted with the atmosphere. This gas has a purifying and stimulating effect. The Oxygen molecule is composed of two atoms of oxygen. When oxygen is charged and acquires more energy it attacts another atom of oxygen and forms a 3 molecule structure called Ozone. It is like supercharged oxygen. This therapy is put into the class of therapies called oxidative therapies.Ozone therapy is not a new treatment. It has been used in Germany since the 1950’s to disinfect donated blood and has been found effective in eliminating transmission of hepatitis, syphilis, and most recently, HIV. Ozone, in addition to having the properties to sterilize tissue, also acts to reduce inflammation and stimulate rejuvenation of tissue.
The most extensive evaluation of its effectiveness in the treatment of eye disorders has been studied by Dr. Silvia Mendenez from Cuba. She has treated thousands of patients and results with eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa have been very impressive. She recently presented her results March 2-3, 2012 at at the international Ozone Therapy for the Medical & Dental World held in California. Dr Robert Rowen who is considered a leading expert on ozone therapy in the United States, and who trains other doctors in this therapy was in attendance to review her work. He was very impressed with her research and he is going to devote the next issue of Second Opinion to her amazing work.
Dr. Silvia Medenez presented her results in the treatment of macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa. The results of each one of these conditions was very impressive with the majority of patients having a significant improvement of vision. Her technique uses rectal ozone which is a non invasive treatment which can be administered at home under a doctors supervision. I am always interested in any treatments that empower a patient to be able to do the treatments at home to reduce the cost of treatment. This is one treatment that can be self administered to reduce the cost of treatment.
In her glaucoma study of 200 patients visual acuity improvement was between 69% and 72% of the patients and the visual field expanded between 59% and 76%. There was also trend to lower intraocular pressure and decreased the latency of P100 (visual evoked potentials). These results demonstrated the effectiveness of this treatment and functional recovery of nerve fibers partially inactive.
Her results were similar in the treatment of macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.
Dr. Mendenez’s treatment protocol consists of rectal ozone 5 days a week for a month, followed by a month rest, and then repeating the daily treatments for a month. This is great news that the rectal ozone treatment is so effective, since this method is less invasive, less costly and much easier to do than the intravenous method. It is also something that patients can do on a very cost effective program at home.
