One of the most popular treatments in our office are ozonated eye drops. Ozone us a highly reactive form of oxygen which increases oxygenation, promotes oxygen uptake, stimulates regeneration and it is a strong anti- bacterial and anti- viral. It is remarkable for helping patients suffering with dry eyes, chronic inflammation and eye strain. In addition to relieving symptoms it also helps with healing.
Unfortunately you can’t buy ozone drops but you need to make your own. The reason is that ozone does not last long in saline. The half life is 2 hours. This means that in 2 hours after making your ozone drops 1/2 of the ozone will be gone. In 4 hours only only 1/4 will be present. After 24 hours very little ozone will be left in the solution.
Ozone generators for making ozonated saline are very inexpensive costing less than 200 dollars. These generators use ambient air and not medical grade oxygen. The ambient air makes a much lower concentration of ozone which is more comfortable when used in the eye.
You must use preservative free saline. I recommend 0.9% preservative free saline. Preservatives can react with the ozone to make toxic byproducts . Do not use water for making ozonated eye drops. the water has very low osmolarity which will cause burning and irritation
Making the drops are simple. Bubble the ozone into saline in a glass container. It must be glass since plastic will react with the ozone. I suggest using a mason canning jar which works very well. Bubble the ozone into the saline for 15 to 20 minutes and then poor the ozonated saline into a glass dropper bottle. Use the drops every 15 minutes as needed
It is best to re-ozonate the saline drops every 6 hours for maximum benefit
Please call or email the office if you are interested in getting started with ozone.
