November 2008

Happy Thanksgiving and Welcome to our November 2008 Newsletter!

November 2008 We are finally moved into our new office and my dream of opening a facility for the alternative treatments of eye disease is now a reality! I attended a very interesting workshop on traumatic brain injury at the COVD (College of Optometrists in Vision Development) this past month. I also had the distinct honor of teaching the 1st Homeopathic seminar to a group of eye doctors at this meeting. This past October we sponsored the 2nd Annual Microcurrent Case Conference in our new office. We have a new program to help seniors keep their driver’s license called “Visual Tune up to pass your eye exam. I have also posted 2 new videos on www.youtube.com on glaucoma.
To your good health and clear vision,

New Office is now open!
We are finally moved into our new office and my dream of opening a facility for the alternative treatments of eye disease is now a reality!  We are now expanding our services into three new directions. The first is IV therapies, such as chelation, oxidative therapies and hyperbaric oxygen.  The second area is vision therapy. This has proven to be a valuable addition in helping bring better functioning vision to our patients. I have found that microcurrent, nutrition and IV therapies can improve acuity, that is the ability to read letters on the eye chart, but it might not improve function. Vision therapy takes the improved acuity and helps to link it to the function of the visual system.  Improvement of function is our goal.  Is does not matter what you see but how you perform in your world!

2 day workshop on Traumatic Brain Injury
I attended a very interesting workshop on traumatic brain injury at the COVD (College of Optometrists in Vision Development) this past month.

What is Traumatic Brian injury?
Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of neurological and visual impairment in our country. Did you know that there are over two million new cases of acquired brain injury each year!  Over 30% of these cases have associated neurological visual impairment.  One thing that really impressed me was that even a simple bump on your head can lead to this syndrome.  The end result is some type of neurological dysfunction, which leads to difficulty in reading, memory,  impaired behavior and problems functioning at work.  It is very shocking that a large group with this disorder is our military from  exposure to IED’s (Improvised Explosive devices).  This  has lead to a large group of soldiers who have survived these explosive devices but have been exposed to shock waves which produced  Brain Injury.
What happens during an injury?
Blunt injury or the resulting shock waves cause shearing, pressure and leakage of the very delicate neurological axions.  This interferes with their ability to transmit information to different parts of the brain.  Messages get lost or the information slows down.  The end result is confusion in neurological functioning.
What treatments are available?
The most fascinating thing that I learned is that there is now concrete evidence that vision therapy can help!  There are many research articles that have investigated neuroplasticity.  It was previously believed that once damage to neurological tissue occurred, that it was irreversible, nothing could be done to regain function.  This theory is now being disproven by scientific evidence.  Research has now shown that damaged neurological axonal cells, after a traumatic brain injury can be reorganized and  regenerated by vision therapy. What this means is that neurological problems can be reversed!  The keys to this process must include the following to be effective:

  1. There must be an active participation.
  2. There must be some type of feedback
  3. There needs to be repetition
  4. Motion needs to matched to a sensory task; mental-eye-hand coordination
  5. Multiple stimuli need to be present (vision, auditory and balance)

These are key components of visual therapy.  There have been many articles published  that document the effectiveness of vision therapy.  We are proud to offer a comprehensive program that not only includes vision therapy but also microcurrent, homeopathy and intravenous therapies to optimize the effectiveness of treatment.

New Equipment! VER to help measure vision and brain function.
We can now measure the visual system, which gives of a very accurate recording of visual function from the retina to the occipital lobe.  It is called the Visual Evoked Response(VER). This is an electrical potential recorded from the brain after a patient looks at a visual stimulus.  This test can measure the degree of functioning  in  patient’ s who may not be very responsive to conventional eye chart testing, such as in infants, stroke victims or the very elderly.  I recently evaluated a 1 year old infant and there was concern that the child might not be seeing out of one eye.  The VER is a method of measuring if the visual system is functioning.
It can also be used to measure the subtle effects of treatments.  When we use  a microcurent  treatment on a patient’s eye we can measure the changes in the VER to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.  This  test is a very exciting addition to the practice because it can help guide us to use more effective treatments .
Many eye doctors who specialize in vision therapy now recommend VER  before patients undergo vision therapy.   Dr Cohen, a specialist in the treatment of brain injuries, reported at the COVD meeting in October 2008, that there is evidence of axonial organization and regeneration after visual therapy.  This means that vision therapy can help strengthen and regenerate brain tissue associated with the visual system. Very exciting information!  VER is going to be a very valuable tool to help determine the most effective therapies and to measure the results of our treatments.

Randomized Clinical Trial of Treatments for Symptomatic Convergence Insufficiency in Children – more proof that vision therapy works!
Convergence Insufficiency (CI)Treatment Trial Study Group*
Arch Ophthalmol. 2008;126 (10):1336-1349.

This article is a landmark study because it demonstrated to key features.  The first key fact is that vision therapy can help correct the convergence insufficiency syndrome, which is a major contributing factor  to reading difficulties in children.  The second is that office treatments are more effective than home exercises.

Convergence insufficiency (CI), is a common binocular vision disorder that is often associated with a variety of symptoms, including eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, diplopia, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, movement of print while reading, and loss of comprehension after short periods of reading or performing close activities.  There are no visible signs of this condition; it can only be detected and diagnosed during an eye examination.  There are simple measurements of the eyes ability to converge or turn inward during reading.  There needs to be a proper ratio of this convergence to the distance from the reading material in order for reading to be efficient.

Dr. Mitchell Scheiman, FCOVD, has completed the 12-week study, known as the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial (CITT), found that approximately 75 percent of those who received in-office therapy by a trained therapist plus at-home treatment reported fewer and less severe symptoms related to reading and other near work.  He states that “Once diagnosed, CI can be successfully treated with office-based vision therapy by a trained therapist along with at-home reinforcement.”To review the complete article

Homeopathy in the treatment of Eye Disease
I had the distinct honor of teaching the 1st Homeopathic seminar to a group of eye doctors at the COVD meeting this past October.  It was a real thrill for me to see  so many eye doctors interested in the homeopathic approach to the treatment of eye disease.  This seminar is a launch of our 5 module series called  “Bring Alternative Medicine to your Practice”. If your eye doctor is interested in alternative medicine, be sure to tell him about this training program.Click here for more info!

Did you know that homeopathy has been part of eye care since the 1800’s in the United Sates? Did you know that New York Eye and Ear Hospital was a Homeopathic Eye Hospital?  Homeopathy can be effective in the treatment of many eye disorders.  The main characteristic of homeopathy is that it treats the person –not the disease.  It also looks for underlying causes. Once these factors are indentified, a homeopathic remedy can be selected to act as a catalyst to help the person heal.  It was a pleasure sharing my experiences in homeopathy with this group of eye doctors.
For more information on homeopathy, please read the homeopathy chapter from my book Healing the Eye the Natural Way:

NEW-Visual Tune up to pass your eye exam
We are pleased to offer this new program to help seniors keep their driver’s license.  One of the greatest fears that a senior faces is losing their drivers license.  Driving represents freedom and mobility.  Much like teenagers, they don’t want to depend on others to help them with transportation.  Failing the eye test can be a death sentence.  Don’t let this happen to you! Vision therapy (VT) can help!  Let us begin a program to improve your chances of passing your vision test.  How can VT help?  There are many studies that show that VT can help reorganize and regenerate damaged neurological tissue.  Let this powerful treatment help you improve your vision.

  1. Do you have macular degeneration?  Learn techniques to develop eccentric fixation. Make your side vision work for you!
  2. Vision is more than acuity.  Learn exercises that will help you in letter recognition.
  3. Develop cognitive centers to take the recognition of letters to the ability to express yourself quickly and confidently.

Visual Tune-up includes an evaluation and 10 VT sessions.  These sessions can be done twice a week, or for out of state patients twice daily for 5 days. Call now to schedule your tune up!

NEW  Glaucoma Videos on youtube!
Glaucoma is a serious eye disorder that is often both under and over diagnosed.  Because symptoms develop slowly, it is often difficult to make a diagnosis.  Treatment with conventional eye  drops have  side effects and in many the cases, the drops are not effective and surgery is needed.  Here at the Healing the Eye Center we are using alternative methods to help strengthen  the eye and reduce the need for eye drops and surgery.  Please view these two exciting videos on glaucoma.
